One of the biggest challenges I face on a regular basis is writer’s block. There’s nothing more dreadful than staring at a blank page and not having any ideas on what I should write about.
Over time, I’ve learned how to get my creative juices flowing before I start writing on digital paper. It wasn’t easy as I have to spend many hours doing research and testing which methods work and which ones don’t.
Plus, it’s not enough to just come up with a topic to write about. I also have to think of a subject matter that many people would be interested in. More importantly, it has to benefit the readers as well.
So, here are proven and effective tips to help you conquer writer’s block.
The world’s most powerful search engine is at your disposal. You can do so many wonderful things with Google to help you produce lots of fantastic ideas.
For example, I want to create a blog post about writing but it’s just too broad. So I’ll have to narrow it down and break it into several manageable parts.
I type the word “writing” in Google search.
I scroll down and look at the “related searches,” which is often ignored by many users.
I gather these results and save them to a file. It doesn’t matter what you choose. Should you decide to keep them for later use, it’s better if you put them in a notepad, a word document or a spreadsheet. That’s entirely up to you.
You can keep clicking on these related searches to collect more ideas until you have enough to build a solid blog post.

You get the idea. Keep doing this process until you have enough to build a solid outline.
Remember what I told you about writing a topic that people would be interested in? You can use Quora for that. The wonderful thing about Quora is you can use it to find out what people are asking and what they want to learn.
For example, I go to Quora and type the word “writing.” Here’s what the search result would yield.
Use these questions to help guide you in building your outline. You can also measure how many people are following a particular topic and how many questions about this subject are being asked.
As you can see, you already found a huge potential audience for your article. Just like Google, you can also find a treasure trove of related topics in your Quora results.
You can also repeat the same technique in Reddit. To get an idea of which topics are performing well, check how many upvotes that a post has earned.
Keep in mind that some posts may not be relevant to the topic you want to write about. So be sure to examine each of them carefully.
Again, the same trick applies to Digg. You can also get ideas on how to write the headline of your article that would pique a reader’s interest and make it highly clickable.
Now, speaking of headlines, here’s one caveat I’d like to point out: Make sure you deliver what your title promises. Otherwise, you’ll only end up disappointing and losing your readership. So don’t crap out articles that fail to deliver its promises.
Tools of the trade
There are many free and handy tools that can help you generate topic ideas, as well as titles. I’ve listed four of them below.
This tool can auto generate titles for you but, of course, the results won’t always be perfect. So you’ll need to tweak them to suit your article. Nevertheless, you can still try to draw some inspiration from these results. Just be creative and have fun playing around with the titles.
This is another free title-generating tool from HubSpot. It works by filling in the three fields with words (preferably nouns). Then, it will yield several results. As always, you still need to tweak the titles and make sure they are grammatically correct.
Now imagine a guy who looks like your old college professor and he’s more than happy to give you content ideas based on your keywords. That’s how this free and quirky tool works. It will also give you a visual representation and an alphabetical list of topic suggestions.
Here’s another free and handy tool that you can use to get ideas for your next article. Just enter your keyword in the search field and it will give you a list of existing titles using your keyword. Now you can use the results as inspiration for your next blog post.
Coming up with ideas on what to write will always be a challenge to anyone, regardless if you’re a beginner or an expert. But hopefully, with the help of these effective tips and free tools, you’ll have no problem in writing your next awesome blog post!
